In this class, students will be guided through an academic but painterly approach to portrait painting in oils. The class will feature demonstrations, group and individual tuition.

What you’ll learn about:

• Drawing and basic facial structural anatomy (intro to Loomis method)

• Blocking-in

• Understanding tones/values

• Basic colour theory

• Edges

• Brush techniques

Essential Materials

• Brushes - range of sizes and shapes natural bristle and synthetics

• Canvas Board or Stretched Canvas - 12x10”/14x10” is a suitable size

Recommended Materials

• Cardboard box to transport wet painting

• Reference images - choose an image or selection of images which inspire you, either printed out or on tablet (non essential as I shall provide a reference)

• 2 jars for solvent
